Frances Tapella was the seventh child and third daughter of Geralamo Tapella, born in St. Louis on November 6, 1918, the last of the family born in the US. Fran, as she was known, worked many years at ???. The best story going around is when Fran started dating Sam Zagarri, she was invited to dinner at her brother Louis's house. When Louis found out that Sam was Sicilian, he refused to have them come, for there was significant bias against southern Italians. It took the intervention of Louis's wife Lena to resolve the issue and, as they say, the rest is history. He married Sam on July 8, 1945. Thier first residence on Shaw Ave. near Viviano's market. They had two sons, Gerald and Ronald. As their family expanded, they moved to a new home in South County off Weber Road. Their basement hosted many family parties. by Charles Tapella |
