Louis Tapella was the first son and second child of Geralamo Tapella. He was born on August 18, 1899 in Cuggiono, Italy, a small town 20 miles west of Milan. He was more commonly known as Gene, a derivation from the Italian Luigi. His father who had emigrated to the US returned to bring his entire family (six children at the time) to back to St. Louis because of the rising problems of World War I. The family sailed from Genoa and arrived at Ellis Island on ????, 1915. The family settled on the Hill in St. Louis. He immediately went to work at one of the clay mines located close to the Hill. With his very first pay check from the job, he purchase a small gold engraved ring before his father could confiscate the pay to help support the family. This action was so uncharacteristic of my father, for he was later a frugal man who only purchased when he had the cash. His best friend from Italy was Tony Bertani who also had emigrated, but to Joliet, Illinois with his brother Enrico and sister Caterina (Lena). While visiting Tony in Joliet, he met Lena who would eventually become his wife. They married on May 11, 1924 and settled on the Hill.
